Contractor’s Exit Sparks Outcry Over Abandoned Road Works in Atwima Nwabiagya South

Residents and commercial drivers in Darkowaa, Anyamesem, Ahwia, Bankyease, and Ntabaanu are protesting the abrupt halt of a road construction project in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality, accusing contractor M/S KNATO COMPLEX LTD of abandoning the site.

According to locals, the contractor recently removed all equipment and tools from the site, leaving the road in a state that has worsened transportation challenges in the area.

Residents say the stalled project is making the movement of people and goods increasingly difficult and is affecting economic activity in the affected communities.

Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Yussif Yaya, said the situation came to light after the contractor was allegedly caught selling cement intended for the project to community members.

When confronted, the contractor reportedly told residents that there were no funds available to continue the work.

“I immediately informed both the Municipal Chief Executive and the Regional Minister about the contractor abandoning the site,” Hon. Yaya said. “But as of now, no action has been taken, and the people are suffering.”

Residents and drivers in the five communities say the deteriorating road conditions are increasing vehicle maintenance costs and delaying travel, particularly during the rainy season. They are appealing to the government to intervene and provide the necessary resources to enable the contractor to return to site and complete the work.

The Chief of the area, Barimaba Nana Adu Boahen, has also called on authorities to act swiftly to prevent further deterioration of the road.

“We cannot continue to watch our roads break down while our people struggle daily to move and transport their goods,” Nana Adu Boahen said. “We are urging the government and the relevant agencies to intervene urgently and ease the burden on commuters.”

The abandoned project has become a source of frustration for residents who say they have waited too long for improved road infrastructure. Many say the situation undermines confidence in ongoing development efforts in the municipality.

Municipal and regional authorities have yet to issue a public response to the concerns raised. Residents say they expect immediate engagement from officials to address the issue and restore progress on the road works.
