Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has officially granted approval for the construction of the 24-Hour Market at Mankranso in the Ahafo Ano South West District following an emergency visit to the area.
The Minister’s urgent visit to the district comes in the wake of a viral video circulating on social media which alleged that an existing classroom block was going to be demolished to make way for the market project, a claim that sparked public debate and concern among residents.
Upon assessing the situation on the ground and engaging stakeholders, Dr. Amoakohene clarified the status of the project and dispelled the misinformation.
Abandoned Classroom Block To Be Modernized, Not Demolished
Contrary to the claims in the video, the Regional Minister stated emphatically that the existing abandoned 14-unit classroom block will not be demolished.
He explained that the facility, which has remained unutilized since its construction, will rather be modernized, renovated and integrated into the broader 24-hour market enclave.
He disclosed that the Mankranso 24-hour market is not just a trading center but a comprehensive economic enclave that will consist of ancillary facilities including a police station, fire service station, banking hall, school, hospital/clinic, modern stores, pharmacy and other essential social amenities to serve traders and the community.
Let Us Unite For Development – Minister
Addressing residents and the media during his visit, Dr. Amoakohene called for unity and an end to what he described as “dirty politics” that seeks to undermine developmental projects.
He urged all political actors, opinion leaders and residents to put aside partisan differences and rally behind development initiatives that will improve livelihoods and transform the local economy.
“We must be one for development and put an end to dirty politics. Development should not be sacrificed on the altar of partisan propaganda,” the Minister stated.
He emphasized that the 24-hour market project is a major development initiative by government intended to create sustainable economic opportunities, improve trading conditions for market women and traders, and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Mankranso and the entire Ahafo Ano South West District.
The project, when completed, is expected to boost local commerce, enhance security, create jobs, and operate a full 24-hour economy model in line with government’s vision of expanding economic activities beyond daytime trading.
Residents who interacted with journalists after the Minister’s visit expressed excitement about the clarification and pledged their support for the project, noting that its integration with the abandoned classroom block will be a judicious use of state resources.
