The Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, popularly known as King Zuba, has called on government to reschedule the National Sanitation Day to the first Friday of every month to enable all institutions to participate fully in the exercise.
The Mayor made the call while speaking to the media after observing this month’s cleanup exercise in Kumasi.
Commends Institutional Turnout
Hon. Ofori-Agyeman Boadi expressed satisfaction with the level of participation by institutions during the two-day general cleanup declared by government on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11.
He noted that the turnout was encouraging, especially following the recent flooding in the nation’s capital, Accra, which highlighted the urgent need for improved sanitation across the country.
“I was much impressed with today’s clean up and the participation of institutions,” the Mayor said. “This shows that when there is clear direction and commitment, we can all come together to keep our environment clean.”
The KMA Mayor argued that fixing National Sanitation Day to the first Friday of every month would make it easier for schools, offices, markets, and other institutions to plan and take part consistently.
According to him, a predictable date on the national calendar will help institutional heads integrate the exercise into their schedules and avoid clashes with other activities.
“If we make it the first Friday of every month, every institution will know and prepare ahead. That way, we will have maximum participation and the impact will be felt in all our communities,” he explained.
Hon. Ofori-Agyeman Boadi linked the call to the recent flooding in Accra, stating that poor sanitation and blocked drains remain major contributors to flooding in urban areas.
He urged residents of Kumasi to see sanitation as a collective responsibility and not to wait only for government-declared days before cleaning their surroundings.
The Mayor further assured that KMA will continue to collaborate with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, traditional authorities, and other stakeholders to sustain clean up efforts across the metropolis.
Government’s Sanitation Directive
Government, in response to the recent floods, declared Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11 as national days for general cleanup exercises. The directive was aimed at clearing choked drains, gutters, and public spaces to mitigate future flooding.
Several metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies across the country participated, with Kumasi recording significant involvement from public institutions, corporate bodies, and residents.
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is expected to review the modalities of the National Sanitation Day as part of broader efforts to strengthen urban resilience and public hygiene.
