Tension is mounting at the Ashanti Regional Office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the disqualification of Afia Brayie Ossei, widely known as Obaatanpa / God Mother, an aspirant for the Oforikrom Constituency Women Organiser position.

The disqualification of the aspirant has sparked agitation among her teeming supporters who massed up at the regional party office to express their displeasure over the decision.

According to the supporters, they believe there is a deliberate and forged plan to remove Afia Brayie Ossei from the contest because she poses a serious threat to the incumbent Women Organiser.

They argue that Obaatanpa, as she is affectionately called, has over the years demonstrated strong grassroots mobilization, commitment to women’s empowerment and loyalty to the NDC in the Oforikrom Constituency, making her a formidable candidate in the race.
“They know she is a threat to the incumbent, that is why they want to disqualify her. This is unfair and undemocratic,” some of the aggrieved supporters told the media.

The supporters are therefore calling on the Ashanti Regional Executives and the National Executives of the NDC to intervene and ensure fairness, transparency and justice in the vetting process.

They warned that any attempt to sideline a popular aspirant like Afia Brayie Ossei could create disaffection among the party’s women wing in Oforikrom and affect the party’s fortunes in the constituency.
Meanwhile, efforts to get an official response from the Ashanti Regional Election Committee on the specific grounds for the disqualification proved unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.

The NDC is currently conducting vetting and balloting for its constituency executive elections across the country ahead of its internal reorganization.
