$1.1 Billion Investment: MTN Ghana Sets Sights On 5G, Connectivity And Economic Growth

The Telecom giant MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to Ghana’s economic growth as it celebrates 30 years of operations, announcing a $1.1 billion investment pledge to accelerate network expansion, 5G readiness, and digital platforms over the next three years.

The announcement was made at the MTN Media and Stakeholders Forum in Kumasi on Monday, as the company launched activities under the theme “30 Years of Progress Powered by You.”

Addressing journalists, partners, and regulators, Angela Mensah-Poku, Chief Enterprise Business Officer of MTN Ghana, said approximately $380 million of the total commitment will be deployed in 2026 alone.

She explained that the investment will focus on building around 800 new network sites nationwide to improve coverage and service quality, upgrading existing infrastructure for 5G, and scaling digital platforms including MoMo, enterprise services, and fintech solutions.

“This investment is about building the Ghana we all want a digitally connected, inclusive and resilient economy,” Mrs. Mensah-Poku said. “To drive digital infrastructure and sustainability, the US$1.1 billion investment will span over the next 3 years.”

Mrs. Mensah-Poku noted that MTN’s journey in Ghana has mirrored the country’s own digital evolution.

From launching its first call in 1996 as a voice and SMS provider, MTN has grown to become Ghana’s leading digital operator.

“The media in Ashanti have told the MTN story,” she said. “From our first call in 1996 to today’s 5G trials, you have been our voice in communities, holding us accountable and helping us connect with the people we serve.”

She credited customers, regulators, partners, and the media for the company’s growth over the last three decades.

Highlighting MTN’s economic footprint, the CEB said the company remains one of Ghana’s largest taxpayers and employers.

“Today, MTN contributes about 6% of the country’s total tax revenue. That is a reflection of how deeply embedded we are in the Ghanaian economy,” she stated.

She added that MTN recorded strong performance in the first quarter of 2026, driven largely by growth in data, Mobile Money, and enterprise services. The company also continues to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the country through its ecosystem of agents, vendors, and partners.

Beyond connectivity, Mrs. Mensah-Poku said MTN is prioritizing a more sustainable business model centered on digital inclusion, youth skills development, environmental responsibility, and support for SMEs.

“As a company, we are committed to a more sustainable business,” she said. “That means investing in clean energy, reducing our carbon footprint, and using technology to solve Ghana’s biggest problems in health, education and finance.”

She said the Kumasi forum forms part of nationwide stakeholder engagements planned for the 30th anniversary, aimed at gathering feedback to shape the next phase of growth.

With Ghana’s digital economy expanding rapidly, MTN said the new investment will be critical to closing connectivity gaps, preparing the network for 5G, and supporting government’s digital transformation agenda.

“Our customers, regulators, partners, and the media have powered this progress,” Mrs. Mensah-Poku concluded. “As we mark 30 years, we are not just celebrating the past. We are investing in the future.”
