Ayanfuri Mmratehene Dies After Accidental Gun Discharge During Funeral Ceremony


The Ayanfuri Traditional Area in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region is in mourning following the death of Mmratehene Nana Kwabena Okyere, who died after accidentally shooting himself during a funeral ceremony on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
According to reports, the incident occurred during the final funeral rites of the Ayanfuri Abusuapanin. Nana Kwabena Okyere was reportedly dancing on the funeral grounds when a pump-action gun he was handling discharged accidentally.
He sustained severe gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts by medical staff, he was pronounced dead at the facility.
The body has since been transferred to the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital Mortuary for preservation and further investigation.
The sudden death has thrown the entire Ayanfuri community into shock and grief, with residents and traditional leaders describing the loss as devastating. Nana Kwabena Okyere was widely respected within the traditional area for his role in local affairs.
Assembly Member for the area, Castro Kwabena Ennin, confirmed the incident and described it as tragic and heartbreaking for the people of Ayanfuri.
“The community is deeply saddened by this unfortunate event. The Mmratehene was a respected leader, and his passing has left a void in the traditional area,” he said.

Police in the Upper Denkyira West District have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officers are working to establish the full details of how the accidental discharge occurred.
Traditional authorities say arrangements for the late chief’s funeral and rites will be announced after consultations with the royal family and the traditional council.
The incident has renewed discussions within the area about safety measures at public gatherings where firearms are traditionally displayed.
