The Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has identified encroachment on roads and pavements at the Agona Lorry Terminal as a major challenge affecting traffic flow and public safety in the Sekyere South District Assembly.
The Minister raised the concern during his tour of the district to inspect development projects being undertaken by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
Encroachment at Agona Lorry Terminal Threatens Safety
Addressing assembly members, traders, and residents, Dr. Amoakohene observed that unauthorized structures and activities on roads and pedestrian pavements around the Agona Lorry Terminal have narrowed access routes and created congestion.
“This encroachment on roads and pavements at the Agona Lorry Terminal is a major problem,” he stated. “It defeats the purpose of providing infrastructure if we allow structures to block them. The Assembly must enforce planning regulations to reclaim public spaces for their intended use.”
He directed the District Assembly and local authorities to take firm steps to remove obstructions and ensure that the terminal remains accessible to drivers, commuters, and pedestrians.
The Regional Minister also responded to complaints from residents about the absence of street lights in parts of Agona, which he said compromises security and movement at night.
He urged Hon. Assembly Members to prioritize street lighting as part of their core responsibilities to their electoral areas.
“If the issue of street lights is not solved by the Assembly Members, then the District Chief Executive must take up the responsibility and fix it,” Dr. Amoakohene directed. “Safety at night is non-negotiable. Our communities must be well-lit to protect lives and property.”
He emphasized that proper street lighting aligns with the government’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure and creating a safer environment for economic activity.
GETFund Projects to Benefit Agona SDA SHS and Training College
Dr. Amoakohene further announced that Agona SDA Senior High School and Agona Training College have been selected as beneficiaries of this year’s GETFund projects.
He said the facilities earmarked for both institutions will be inspected to assess progress and ensure quality delivery.
“The GETFund interventions are meant to improve the teaching and learning environment,” he noted. “We will inspect the projects to confirm they meet standards so our students and teachers can benefit fully.”
The Minister reaffirmed the NDC government’s commitment to investing in education, road infrastructure, and urban development across the Ashanti Region as part of the “Reset Ghana” agenda.
He charged district authorities and assembly members to collaborate with residents to protect public infrastructure and ensure projects deliver lasting value.
