The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, is set to donate US$250,000, equivalent to about GH₵3 million, to support victims of Ghana’s recent devastating floods.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
According to the Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially received notification from the ECOWAS Commission confirming the donation. The funds are intended to provide immediate relief to households and communities affected by the June 29 floods.
“The Ministry on behalf of the Government of Ghana expresses profound appreciation to ECOWAS for its solidarity and genuine African compassion during this difficult period,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.
He assured the public that in the interest of transparency and accountability, the full amount will be transferred to the appropriate authorities immediately after it is received into the ministry’s accounts.
The floods, which occurred on June 29, 2026, affected several communities across *seven regions* of Ghana.
Government assessments indicate that thousands of households were displaced, while homes, businesses, schools, and critical infrastructure suffered extensive damage. Relief agencies have been working to provide emergency shelter, food, water, and medical support to affected families.
The donation from ECOWAS is expected to augment ongoing government and humanitarian efforts to provide relief items, rehabilitate displaced persons, and support early recovery activities.
ECOWAS has a history of mobilizing support for member states during natural disasters and humanitarian crises. Regional leaders have repeatedly emphasized the need for collective response mechanisms to address climate-related disasters across West Africa.
Mr. Ablakwa said the government welcomes the gesture as a demonstration of regional unity and will ensure the funds are deployed swiftly to where they are most needed.
“Ghana remains grateful for the continued support of ECOWAS and other development partners as we work to restore livelihoods and rebuild affected communities,” he added.
Government, in collaboration with NADMO and other agencies, continues to coordinate relief distribution while also rolling out plans for long-term reconstruction in the hardest-hit areas.
