The KGL Foundation has completed and commissioned a full renovation of the Out-Patient Department (OPD) Centre at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, a move aimed at improving mental healthcare delivery and enhancing the dignity and well-being of patients seeking treatment.
The project was officially commissioned last Thursday, June 7, 2026, as part of the Foundation’s broader corporate social responsibility initiative focused on creating welcoming, patient-friendly health facilities across Ghana.
The renovated OPD center now features improved consulting rooms, better safety standards, and a more comfortable environment for patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers.
Hospital officials say the upgrade addresses years of wear and tear and aligns the facility with modern standards of psychiatric care.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of the KGL Foundation, Mr. Elliot Dadey, said the intervention was driven by the need to make a tangible impact in Ghana’s mental health sector.
“The physical condition of healthcare facilities plays a critical role in treatment and recovery,” Mr. Dadey stated.
“This renovation is our contribution toward making mental healthcare more accessible, dignified, and less stigmatizing for Ghanaians who need support.”
He expressed confidence that the upgraded environment would improve the quality of care delivered at the hospital and encourage more people to seek professional help without fear of judgment.
Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Kwadwo Marfo Obeng, commended the Foundation for what he described as a “significant transformation” of the hospital’s image and operational space.
According to Dr. Obeng, the facelift has enhanced safety and comfort in consulting areas while creating a more welcoming atmosphere for patients, visitors, and staff.
He noted that the improved physical environment is already changing public perception about psychiatric care.
“The improvement in the physical environment is encouraging more people to seek professional mental health support and helping to change public perceptions about psychiatric care,” Dr. Obeng said.
“When facilities are clean, safe, and dignified, patients feel valued and stigma begins to break down.”
Mr. Dadey also used the occasion to call on corporate institutions and philanthropic organizations to invest more in mental healthcare infrastructure.
He emphasized that mental health remains a critical pillar of national development and that sustainable progress requires collective effort.
“The KGL Foundation remains committed to interventions that positively impact vulnerable groups and contribute to national development,” he added. “Mental health cannot be left behind in our development agenda.”
The ceremony brought together key players in Ghana’s mental health sector, including Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, Dr. Eugene Dordoye; Clinical Coordinator, Dr. Susan Seffah; Head of Public Relations and Deputy Clinical Coordinator, Dr. Peggy Asiedu Ekremet; Director of Administration at the Mental Health Authority, Mr. Victus Kpesese; and Deputy Director, Mr. Emmanuel Hanson Torde.
Stakeholders described the renovation as a timely intervention that will contribute significantly to better service delivery, improved patient experience, and increased public confidence in mental healthcare services in Ghana.
With demand for mental health services rising nationwide, hospital management says the upgraded OPD centre will help the Accra Psychiatric Hospital manage patient load more efficiently while maintaining higher standards of care.
