MTN Ghana Steps Up Cyber Safety Campaign, Warns Customers Against Fraudulent Messages and Links

The leading Telecommunication in africa, MTN Ghana has intensified its public awareness drive on cyber safety, cautioning customers against fraudulent messages, fake online promotions, and suspicious links designed to steal personal and financial information.

In a security advisory released in Accra, the telecommunications company urged mobile phone and internet users across the country to exercise caution when receiving unexpected messages that request sensitive information or promise unrealistic rewards.

According to MTN Ghana, cybercriminals are increasingly using deceptive tactics to trick unsuspecting individuals into revealing confidential details such as passwords, PINs, mobile money credentials, and banking information. Many of these fraudulent messages are circulated through WhatsApp, SMS, emails, and fake websites that mimic legitimate platforms.

The company said some scammers create a false sense of urgency by claiming that accounts are at risk, have been suspended, or require immediate verification. Others lure users with promises of cash rewards, promotional giveaways, or prize winnings to encourage clicks on malicious links.

MTN Ghana advised customers not to trust messages offering prizes or financial benefits without proper verification. Subscribers were urged to ignore suspicious promotions and avoid responding to messages from unknown sources.

The company also emphasized the importance of checking website authenticity before entering personal information online.

Customers were encouraged to confirm that websites use secure connections, indicated by “https://” and a padlock icon in the browser address bar.

As part of its anti-fraud measures, MTN Ghana reminded the public that it does not request passwords, PINs, or complete financial details through text messages, social media, or unofficial communication channels. Customers were advised to use only official MTN applications, verified customer service channels, and trusted websites for transactions and account-related services.

Individuals who suspect fraudulent activity or believe they may have shared information with scammers have been advised to contact MTN customer support via shortcode 100 or report incidents to the police for immediate assistance.

MTN Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to protecting customers from cyber threats and promoting responsible digital practices nationwide. The company said increasing public awareness remains one of the most effective ways to reduce online fraud and safeguard users.

The advisory forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity consciousness among mobile subscribers and ensure safer digital communication in Ghana’s rapidly expanding technology environment.
