Atwima Nwabiagya North DCE Mba Zachariah Commissions First Government School At Nketia Since Independence, Hands Over 6-Unit Block At Akwaboa

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atwima Nwabiagya North, Hon. Mba Zachariah, has officially commissioned a newly constructed 3-unit classroom block at Nketia and a 6-unit classroom block at Akwaboa today, September 17, 2026.

The commissioning ceremony, which was attended by traditional leaders, education directors, teachers, pupils, parents and party faithful, was filled with excitement as residents described the projects as historic and life-changing.

Historic Moment For Nketia – First Gov’t School Since Independence

Speaking at the gathering at Nketia, Hon. Mba Zachariah disclosed that since Ghana’s independence, the Nketia community has not had a government school, a situation that has compelled children to walk long distances to access basic education.

He recalled that during the 2024 campaign, he promised the residents of Nketia that he would ensure the community gets its first public school if the NDC government was voted into power, and today that promise has been fulfilled.

“Since independence, Nketia community doesn’t have a government school. During our campaign time, I promised the residents that we will give them a school, and today is the time for the fulfillment of that promise,” he stated.

Hon. Mba explained that the new classroom blocks will help curb congestion in classrooms and create a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning for both teachers and pupils.

He emphasized that education remains a top priority of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, and the government will continue to invest heavily in educational infrastructure to ensure no child is left behind.

DCE Warns Smokers Against Using School Premises

The DCE also used the occasion to send a strong warning to individuals, particularly smokers, who have turned the school premises into a smoking haven.

He cautioned them to desist from the act immediately or face severe sanctions from the Assembly and law enforcement agencies.

“This school was built for our children’s future. We will not allow anyone to destroy it with smoking and other bad behaviours. Anyone caught will face huge sanctions,” Hon. Mba warned.

Traditional Leaders Commend Gov’t, Appeal For More Support

On his part, the Gyaasehene of Nketia, Nana Kwaku Duah, on behalf of the chiefs and people of Nketia, commended the NDC government and the DCE for their selfless service to Ghanaians, especially the people of Nketia.

He said the community is highly appreciative of the government’s unflinching support and commitment to development.

Nana Kwaku Duah, however, made a passionate appeal to the District Assembly and government for additional facilities to complement the new school block.

He pleaded for the construction of a mechanized borehole to serve both the school and the entire community, as access to potable water remains a challenge.

He also called for the provision of a toilet facility for the school, since there is currently none, to improve sanitation and hygiene among pupils and teachers.

The DCE assured the chiefs and residents that their requests have been noted and that the Assembly will work to address them in due course as part of its broader development agenda for the district.
