The Founder and Leader of Pillar of Zion Church Ministry International, Evangelist Akwasi Awuah, has admonished Christians to place greater emphasis on spiritual growth, warning that devotion to football offers no lasting benefit compared to the Word of God.
Speaking during an all-night church service held on June 19, the evangelist said believers must be cautious not to allow entertainment to distract them from their faith and civic responsibilities.
“Watching football matches will not gain you anything, but only the Word of God will save you,” Evangelist Awuah told congregants. “Football is just a game of fun and afterwards you gain nothing, only just a feel. The excitement is temporary, but salvation is eternal.”
He further criticized the financial implications of major football tournaments, arguing that the resources expended could address critical infrastructure and social needs in Ghana.
“This football game only brings us debts. After the World Cup, then we will know the amount of money spent on this football tournament,” he said.
“Whiles our roads are in bad states, poor healthcare persists, which we can use these monies to solve these issues.”
The clergyman also touched on environmental degradation, highlighting the impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, on Ghana’s lands and water bodies. He called for more inclusive national dialogue to tackle the country’s pressing problems.
“If opportunities are given for us to share our opinions, it will be of help,” Evangelist Awuah stated. “Our lands are spoiled by this illegal mining known as galamsey. As Christians and citizens, we must focus on issues that build our nation and secure our future.”
The remarks come at a time when Ghana, like many nations, is grappling with debates over public spending priorities, infrastructure deficits, and the social effects of global sporting events.
While football remains a unifying cultural force for many Ghanaians, religious leaders such as Evangelist Awuah continue to urge believers to maintain a balance between recreation and spiritual discipline.
Pillar of Zion Church Ministry International, based in Kumasi, is known for its emphasis on practical Christianity and commentary on national affairs.
Members of the congregation said the message served as a timely reminder to align personal priorities with faith and community development.
