The Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency, Hon. Shirley Kyei, has commended the Queen Mother of Toase, Nana Amonu Gyamfuaa Serwaa Bonsu, and the Queen Mother of Nkawie, Oheneyere Adoma Akosua, for their joint collaboration in organizing a breast cancer awareness and free breast screening exercise for women in the constituency.

The health outreach, held at the Yim Awere Ababio Dwabrem inside Toase, brought together hundreds of women from Toase, Nkawie and surrounding communities, as part of activities to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October.
The screening was conducted by the Breast Care Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) under the theme: “United for a Breast Cancer-Free Ghana: Early Detection, Early Action, Better Outcome.”
Speaking to the media after the exercise, Hon. Shirley Kyei lauded the two Queen Mothers for their exemplary leadership and commitment to improving the health and well-being of women in the traditional area.

According to the MP, Nananom have made it their core mandate to prioritize health, especially women’s health, and their consistent investment in health-related interventions deserves commendation and support from all stakeholders.
“Nananom have made it their core mandate to make health their first priority. What Toasehemaa and Nkawiehemaa have done today is a clear demonstration of true motherly love and responsible traditional leadership. They are not only preserving our culture but also saving the lives of our women,” Hon. Shirley Kyei stated.

She emphasized that breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among women, yet many cases could be prevented or successfully treated if detected early, hence the need for sustained awareness and regular screening at the community level.
The MP noted that such community-based interventions are crucial in bridging the health access gap for rural women who often face financial and geographical barriers to accessing specialist care.

Hon. Shirley Kyei further announced that as part of her own commitment to women’s health, she will continue from where Nananom left off by organizing her own free breast screening exercise.
She disclosed that her edition of the free breast screening will come off this Saturday at Abuakwa, the Municipal Capital of Atwima Nwabiagya South.
According to her, the Abuakwa screening will be open to all women in the constituency and will be conducted by qualified health professionals who will also provide education on self-breast examination and early warning signs of breast cancer.
“I am continuing from Nananom. On Saturday, I will hold my free breast screening at Abuakwa to ensure that more women in our constituency benefit from this life-saving exercise,” she announced.
She therefore called on all women in Atwima Nwabiagya South to take advantage of the upcoming exercise and to make regular breast check-ups a habit.
The MP also used the opportunity to call for stronger collaboration between traditional authorities, political leadership, health institutions and corporate bodies to promote preventive healthcare and improve health outcomes in the constituency.
Beneficiaries at the Toase event expressed appreciation to the Queen Mothers and Hon. Shirley Kyei for their dedication to women’s health and for bringing critical health services closer to the people.
