The Chief of Toase Traditional Area, Nana Yim Awere Ababio, has charged trustees and managers of pension schemes in Ghana to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency and accountability to safeguard the future of Ghanaian workers, particularly health professionals.

According to the revered traditional ruler, healthcare professionals exhibit enormous sacrifice and professionalism in their daily service to the nation and therefore deserve a pension system that secures their future with the same level of dedication they demonstrate in caring for others.

Nana Yim Awere Ababio made the call in his capacity as Special Guest of Honour at the 4th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Health Sector Occupational Pension Scheme (HSOPS).

The AGM was held on Thursday, 15th October, 2026, at the Lancaster Hotel, Kumasi, under the theme: “Strengthening Pension Security Through Smart Investments, Good Governance and a Sustainable Future.”
The high-level meeting brought together some of Ghana’s top policymakers and industry leaders in health, finance and labour.
In attendance were Representatives of Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who was the Guest of Honour, the Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, who served as Guest Speaker, and the Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Hon. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, who was a Special Guest alongside Toasehemaa Nana Amonu Gyamfuaa Serwaa Bonsu as a Special Guest.

Also present were the Chairman of the HSOPS Board of Trustees, Mr. Frederick Mensah Acheampong, the Member Secretary of the Board, Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, and the Keynote Speaker, Mr. Kisseih Antonio, President of the Ghana Securities Industry Association and Managing Director of Sentinel Asset Managers.

Delivering his address, Nana Yim Awere Ababio II stressed that managing a pension fund is a sacred trust that demands uncompromising integrity, transparency, accountability and prudent investment decisions.

“Pension fund demands integrity, transparency, accountability, and prudent investment decisions. We have a solemn responsibility to protect members’ contributions, grow pension assets sustainably, and ensure that beneficiaries can look forward to a dignified retirement,” he stated.

Toasehene noted that in the face of an increasingly challenging global and domestic economic environment, it has become even more imperative for trustees and scheme managers to strengthen corporate governance systems, improve member education, embrace appropriate innovation and maintain higher standards of financial accountability.
He explained that when these principles are upheld, contributors will have full confidence that their hard-earned contributions are being managed in their best interest.

The Chief commended the Board of Trustees, management and all stakeholders for their resilience and commitment in sustaining the scheme since its inception.
“I wish to commend the board of trustees and all stakeholders for their efforts in sustaining this scheme up to this time. Your work is essential to building trust in Ghana’s pension system and providing greater retirement security for healthcare professionals across the country,” he said.
Nana Yim Awere Ababio further reminded participants that while they celebrate the achievements of the HSOPS, they must remain focused on a single shared objective – to ensure that those who dedicate their working lives to caring for others can retire with dignity, financial security and peace of mind.
He urged all participants at the meeting to engage constructively, share practical ideas and take decisions that will inure to the benefit of both current members and future generations of healthcare workers.
“Let’s leave this meeting not only with resolutions but with renewed determination to turn those resolutions into lasting progress. Together we can build a pension scheme that honors the service of our healthcare workers and gives every member confidence in tomorrow,” he stressed.
Concluding his address, Toasehene wished all participants truthful deliberations and a successful AGM. He expressed his sincere appreciation to the Board of Trustees, management, service providers and every stakeholder whose dedication continues to strengthen the scheme.
“Your commitment is an investment in the dignity, security, and the hope of those who care for our nation. We will continue to protect those who protect Ghana in the God-blessed Health Sector Occupational Pension Scheme in our future,” he added.
The 4th HSOPS AGM was held both in-person and virtually, with live streaming on Facebook and YouTube via @hsopsghana, and via Zoom, allowing thousands of health workers across the country to participate.
The Health Sector Occupational Pension Scheme, operating under the motto “Retire with a Smile,” is the Tier-Two occupational pension scheme for all workers in Ghana’s health sector. It is mandated to manage members’ contributions, invest prudently and ensure sustainable retirement benefits that guarantee a dignified retirement for healthcare professionals.
