The race for the National Women’s Organizer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gathering momentum, with former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, emerging as the overwhelming preferred choice among the party’s grassroots.
Hon. Hawa Koomson, who has officially declared her intention to contest, has picked Number 2 on the ballot paper ahead of the Party’s National Delegates Conference slated for October 3, 2026.
As the NPP prepares to reorganize and re-energize its structures after the 2024 general elections, support for the former Minister is growing rapidly across the 16 regions, with constituency women organizers, youth wing executives and polling station executives rallying behind her candidature.
According to our survey in the Central, Ashanti, Greater Accra and Western Regions, Hon. Hawa Koomson’s vast political experience, motherly appeal, courage and deep-rooted connection with the grassroots make her the ideal candidate to lead the party’s women’s wing into the future.
“Hon. Hawa Koomson is a proven leader. She understands the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian woman because she has worked with them from polling station to ministerial level. She is bold, courageous and has always stood for the party even in difficult times,” a constituency women organizer from Awutu Senya East stated.
A Track Record of Service and Loyalty
Supporters point to her impressive track record as a three-term Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and her stewardship as Minister for Special Development Initiatives and later Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, where she championed several intervention programs that directly benefited women, fisherfolks and vulnerable groups.
They argue that her experience in party organization, campaign mobilization, and women empowerment gives her a distinct advantage over other contenders in the race.
“At this crucial time when the NPP needs a unifier who can bring all women together and rebuild confidence, Hon. Hawa Koomson is the best bet. She is respected, results-oriented and has the charisma to lead the women’s front with strength and victory,” another regional executive from Ashanti noted.
Grassroots Confidence High
Many within the party believe that under her leadership as National Women’s Organizer, the NPP’s women’s wing will become more vibrant, visible, and formidable in reaching out to female voters, including market women, queen mothers, student groups and professional women across the country.
Her loyalists are confident that picking the Number 2 spot on the ballot is a sign of victory, and that she will emerge victorious on October 3 to lead the party’s women agenda.
The National Women’s Organizer position remains one of the most strategic portfolios in the NPP, responsible for coordinating women’s activities, shaping gender-focused policies, and driving the party’s electoral strategy among Ghanaian women, who constitute a critical voting bloc.
As the campaign heats up, all eyes are now on Hon. Hawa Koomson, who many delegates describe as the “woman of the moment” to lead the NPP women into a new era of unity, strength and electoral victory.
