The Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has commended the government for the country’s improving economic conditions, stating that recent gains are restoring hope for pensioners, women, and families across Ghana.

Addressing Parliament, the MP reflected on the hardship retirees faced during the implementation of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme. She noted that the policy hit many women particularly hard, as a large number of pensioners whose savings and monthly incomes were affected were women who had depended on those funds for decades.
Hon. Zuwera recalled the public demonstrations staged by pensioners at the Ministry of Finance in 2023, a moment she said captured the depth of public concern.

She pointed to the participation of former Chief Justice Her Ladyship Sophia Akuffo in those protests as evidence that the issue transcended politics and touched the dignity of Ghana’s elderly citizens.

According to the Salaga South MP, the reduction in pension incomes placed an enormous burden on many women retirees. For most, those funds were not just for personal upkeep but for supporting children, assisting grandchildren with school fees, and maintaining a modest but dignified standard of living in retirement.
The cuts, she said, disrupted family budgets and created uncertainty in many households.
However, Hon. Zuwera expressed optimism about the current economic outlook. She said the stabilization of the cedi, easing inflation, and more predictable prices are gradually rebuilding confidence among families.
With inflation now at its lowest level in recent years, households can better plan monthly expenditures without the constant pressure of rising costs.
“Parents and grandparents are once again able to budget for basic needs and still have something left to spend quality time with their loved ones at recreational centres and national landmarks,” she told Parliament. “That is what economic stability should deliver not just numbers, but improved quality of life.”
The MP commended the Finance Minister for the positive economic indicators presented to the House, describing the current inflation performance as one of the most significant achievements in recent decades.
She called it a remarkable milestone that reflects the effectiveness of fiscal discipline and recent economic management measures.
Hon. Zuwera urged Ghanaians to acknowledge and celebrate the progress made so far. She expressed confidence that sustained economic discipline and prudent policy management would continue to strengthen household finances and improve living conditions nationwide.
Her remarks add to ongoing parliamentary discussions on Ghana’s post-DDEP recovery and the social impact of macroeconomic reforms.
Analysts say the focus on pensioners and women highlights the human dimension of economic policy, as the country works to consolidate gains while protecting vulnerable groups.
